We had scones for breakfast---an odd, quick thought as I perused the shelves for something kinda special for at-home-on-a-cold-morning. We had Bisquick, which we never seem to have, but this was left from making the sausage balls for Christmas morning. And I'd been telling myself to try out making muffins to use up that quart jug of eggnog left from Christmas---we never seem to drink it, but you just BUY ONE to be sure.
So that's what I did; I measured out the Bisquick and threw in two teaspoons of sugar, then the custard, and stirred it all together. A handful of dried cranberries, and dropped from two spoons onto the silpat---a scatter of Turbinado sugar sparkles, then oven 425 for 20 minutes. A quick brush with melted butter, a few slices of bacon out of the microwave, and we sat down. It was lovely and different---I DID sprinkle a bit of cinnamon over the last two bits of dough in the bowl before I dropped them, just to try the different taste, and they were quite nice.
I go back often and read a little excerpt from a letter from my dear Cousin Sandra, gone from us way too soon---her imaginary, wonderful life filled with warmth and love, as was her REAL one:
A rosemary bed interspersed with basil, lavender and multicolored zinnias lines the porch front. We watch the sunrise and smell the scent of fresh baked scones bursting with blueberries to be painted with cream and sugar and eaten with cheese scribbled with honey, and some sun-kissed figs. We sit sipping coffee and telling our stories.
I will bike to the town square and open my little bookstore and knitting shop around midmorning. The sitting and chatting and loving each other is the first and most important part of our days.
The old worn stone pathway leads from the back door to the
kitchen garden where we gather hands full of herbs, baby field greens, yellow and orange tomatoes, tiny carrots, and pencil thin asparagus for shared meals.
The fresh laundered cloth gives off a faint lavender perfume as it is spread atop the farm table. A vase of old garden roses sits amongst the just lit candles. The room is filled with the laughter of friends and kinfolk and little ones, and all will be blessed. And all will be blessed.
We will sit on the porch in the evening and watch the rosy leavings of the sun. This pink-washed peace is for all of us. How I wish I could give away a piece of these days like loafs of warm bread.
As the day draws to a close, we kneel together and bow in adoration with thanksgiving, praying---O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed. Then in Thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest. Amen.
Always together at last light, we will hold hands and hug and grow young together in this place.
The scones sound delicious and Sandra's letter is so lovely, it almost takes the breath away.
ReplyDeleteI KNOW! My breath was taken every note, every comment on here, every e-mail and text, she strewed Grace like golden seeds. I cannot tell you how it was to receive any missive from her, for she spoke of such lofty things, seeing worlds in a flowerpot and kingdoms in a cobweb. I was constantly amazed and honored and humbled beyond belief when she spoke of ME in the most gracious words---how she'd looked up to me (eight years my junior) and had always tried to copy my ways. It was like having a signed note from an angel every time, and that LOVE she sent was real and true.
DeleteWhat a wonderful letter from your cousin Sandra! I feel like she and I are kindred spirits. Of course our day will start in the rockers on the porch, sipping tea and nibbling on hot buttery scones! And then bicycling on our cute girl bikes, with wicker baskets and streamers on the handlebars, to the bookstore, knitting store and bakery ( I am adding the bakery).
ReplyDeleteYour own scones sound delicious! We had a scone at our tea party that was bacon and cheddar cheese. I am not a usual fan of savory scones, but I brought 1/2 home and reheated it for lunch and it was pretty tasty!
How I wish for you those golden mornings of biking down those sweet little shady streets to the square, opening the door to your fragrant, colorful realms of thread and pages and scones---days spent there with people you know and who come to you for your company as well as the lovely goods and stories they can find there. You have to just imagine what a sweet spirit lived inside that shining girl---you know, sometimes there's just a GLOW to someone the first time you meet---even in childhood, and a shine to every encounter you share.
DeleteShe made you feel the most important person in her world, your words the most eloquent, your stories the funniest or most interesting---those huge brown eyes just drinking in every mote of energy and color that you provided, and echoing it back. That picture up there was taken in her garden---she was standing there in that Alabama sunshine in a white cotton sun-dress, her glorious pale hair a gleaming halo as she bent to pick the flowers. Kodak and Polaroid hold no such powers as the memory I have of that shining moment.
OH MY ! Everyone should have a Cousin Sandra! What a lovely day she described and an even lovelier evening prayer…I think you have inherited Cousin Sandra’s gift of writing.✍️ Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteWishing you and yours joy and smiles, Virginia
Oh, Virginia! What a sweet compliment---I will never have her sweet spirit or the vast knowledge of the Bible, the paths she guided her children and Grands upon, the sheer force of her gentle words and advice. Her whole world existed at that pleasant pace, it seemed---walking in a Grace that cleared the shadows and made all things seen through a golden lens. She was one of the most fortunate happenings that happened to me, ever, and her admiration and love were some of the greatest gifts I ever received.
DeleteOh, my goodness, Sandra's letter is just beautiful - so heartfelt in her appreciation of all the small things that are truly such a gift to us all! Thank you so much for stopping by to visit my blog today, Racheld. The bag you described sounds like a great style too - and useful! Please stop by again - I have added your blog to my "Fun Places to Visit" list. I will take some time to read some of your older posts this morning. Blessings :)
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! Unpackling groceries and peeped in---moire non when I'm still---what a lovely thing to have a new reader---I dropped out of my blog, begun in 2008, about five years ago because of the WORLD in stasis, and am just getting back into the swing.
DeleteJust little home things, Southern memories, family doings and totally Rated G. Cozy Cottage sounds perfect in every respect, and here I come, soon!!

I'm so glad you could drop in, Debbie, and I've certainly enjoyed visiting all around your wonderful household of so many sumptuous goodies that there's never a dull moment. What a plethora of celebratory goodies, for every occasion! I LOVE seeing your latest creations, and should have chimed in long ago---I've been feeling like someone enjoying the ride immensely, but never thanking the generous Conductor!!
DeleteJust know that you've brightened many a midnight, a sunny morning, a gotta-get-up-and-do- something moment for me during some very dark times, and even if I returned to the same post, there were always fun and beautiful little crannies and vignettes that I'd missed. I thank you for just BEING there, just casting out all those lovely scenes and celebrations, to land right on my screen when I needed a lift or some inspiration. We had a wonderful St. Patrick's Day lunch yesterday---a Bon Voyage and YAHOOOO to our GRAND who will be marching in the parade in Dublin next week. All that green and gold we were scattering around was due in some part to YOU, and I'm smiling!!
