THINKING ABOUT YOU

I've just read of the earthquake centered near Richmond, and hope that all our lovies on the East Coast are safe and well.    All phone circuits seem to be busy, so I'll hope to hear from them all soon.

Until I can reach you---Kim and Mike and Ben and Lil---stay safe and know we're thinking of you.

  1. Ben & Lil are safe. Barely felt the quake, thank goodness.

Phone service spotty because everyone is on talking about the quake!

Trying preserves with white figs today--not sure about this batch!

  2. Kim emailed me, and I saw it right after the post above. She and Mike are fine. Thank you for thinking and asking about us!

  3. We and ours are fine. It was quite a little ride for my father and my nephews. Dad lives eight miles from the epicenter, my stepsister's family about four. The teenaged boys got a text out soon after saying they were fine. I suspect they wanted it to last longer. Dad was a bit shaken, emotionally. But again no damage. A few roofs collapsed in that area, and the nuke plants were shut down for a while. Always a comfort to have them so close, and sitting damn smack on top of the fault line.

I was at work, and things were shaken off of walls, a few folks' personal items (lamps, hanging pics) were destroyed. But thankfully no injuries. I did have to send a staff member home, she was too scared to go back into the building. She sent me an email from the liquor store, saying she was feeling better.

All in all more of a curiousity, and a scary one at that, than an event. We got lucky, thank God. Thanks for asking!

  5. Ms. Chessie, please keep your head low and your patio furniture battened down this weekend. We are in for quite a blow, it appears.

  6. Just fine here - we had a lot of noise and shaking at the office. It was a little scary when it happened and I couldn't get in touch with Mike or Jess, though. Jessie and I even went to a cooking class tonight - a birthday gift to me from her. There was apparently an aftershock during the class and we didn't even feel it.

  7. Rachel, This quake was felt in so many places. I read your comments and I am glad many of your friends are ok. I pray that all is well with everyone. Beverly called me and they felt the tremors in Durham, NC. Now my concern is the Hurricane out there. I pray it goes East of the coast and out to sea.

I wrote a comment on your previous post. Loved the preserves you made.

Yes, We girls (I use that term loosely) had a blast with the peignoirs twirling and laughing at ourselves.
Blessings and prayers for your loved ones in the quake.

  8. I'm glad to hear your loved ones were out of harm's way from the earthquake, and hope Hurricane Irene weakens before making landfall, wherever that may be.

Looking forward to catching up on some of your older posts.

  9. Thanks for the well wishes, and now we begin preparing for the hurricane. I am actually hoping Irene will bring lots of rain to the Great Dismal Swamp fire. The peat of the swamp is so dry it just burns under live trees, and is now over 6000 acres, partly feeding on debris from a 2008 fire there.

Oh, and in between stocking-up, more fig preserves and preserved large Brown Turkeys today!

  11. I KNOW earthquakes and they are frightening. We live with the possibility of one constantly. Water supply in the garage, wrench attached to the gas meter outside..all that stuff. We keep non parishable food in store...
I hope everyone is alright...and now this hurricane headed at those poor folks.

  13. Two brief power outages and some limbs down, and that's about it for us in Chesapeake, outside of Norfolk. We are very grateful to have made it through so easily. Our friends in Richmond, Kim & Mike, apparently had worse winds than here, where the eye came through. I'm sure we will hear from them shortly.

Prayers for folks farther north, and thanks for all the good wishes.

  14. We are fine - lots of debris and scary winds last night. We had a huge tree limb go through the roof of our shed and Mike and his dad got that down this morning. Lots of clean up left to do, not to mention getting in line for the roofing folks to fix the shed roof. But we were lucky - the folks down the street had the same thing happen to their house. No one hurt, I think, so that's a blessing.
