MANY SHADES

Thank you, Beverly, for hosting this delightful place called

Tonight's the night to bring in all the pots from from the yard and patio, to spend the long cold times inside.   This little girl is especially precious, for she was a Mothers' Day gift from Sweetpea and her Mama and Daddy, and has bloomed her little heart out all Summer.

We've been battening down and storing up, and these cold nights are just perfect for the afternoon-long simmer of a pot of pinto beans and ham, filling the house with their scrumptious scent, til it's time to sit down together to warm bowls with crusty cornbread.

I'm calling this "cold weather" though it's 52 right now, and apt to drop another fifty degrees and more before Winter surrenders again to Spring.

Now is the kind of weather I've saved the jelly-and-preserves making for, with the redolence of sweet fruit filling the house.   The picture doesn't do this batch justice---this was a shimmery rosy potful, one of those BIGGGG papayas, about a five-pounder, cut into cubes and sugared overnight, then cooked off with a little lemon zest and vanilla.      Lovely with a wedge of Cheddar, and elegant with all the wonderful cheeses Caro chooses for the Cheese Plate on our Dinner Nights together.

And, of course, a cold day is always warmed by a lovely corned beef brisket simmering on the stove, and made perfect by the tiny potatoes and carrots and wedges of cabbage cooked gently during the last hour.

We're settling in to enjoy all the wonderful cool-and-cold  weather cooking and activities, til Spring rolls round again.

  1. I do not have to worry about bringing in my plants. The Texas drought took care of them, not cold weather.

  4. I do not like cold weather, even though I know some folk really like it. I'm not one of them. But, your talk of foods to soothe the tummy and delicious scents to calm the soul, makes it sound positively wonderful!

  8. Hello Rachel, Yep, it is me, blogging again. I have missed you my dear blogging friend. Your post is pretty in pink and delicious to see. I usually make corned beef for St. Patrick's Day. It sure looks good today.

I read the posts I missed as I always do when I can't visit as much as I would like. I love the lovely fall pics and your 'oh so blue' sky photos. Not to mention the fall colors. My favorite time of the year. I too love to make soups and winter casseroles. Baking is always more fun when it is chilly outside.

Did you really go to Scotland? I want to go there so much. My dad's family are Scottish/Irish. I'm not sure what that means. My maiden name is Coulter. Do you know the song about Coulter's Candy? When we have Scottish Days we always go to a certain booth and the Scottish lady sings it for us.

Love and hugs...I am glad to be visiting you again.

  9. Oh...that pot of beans! I have a bag of pintos in the pantry and a meaty ham bone in the freezer saved for just such a pot of goodness. Now all I need is some time!

  10. Happy Pink Saturday, dear Rachel.

That is a beautiful pink lady. Will she live over winter in the house for you. My flowering plants never make it over winter in our house.

Soups and stews and bubbly casseroles sound just perfect. I'll be right over.
