NIBBLE, NIBBLE . . .

Lovely days with GRANDS this week---they’ve been here whilst their Mom and Dad see to the new house.  We’ve cooked and played games and cards, we’ve played CLAY and painted and made a magnificent pink paper-chain for the kitchen pass-through, along with a set of exquisite hand-cut snowflakes to dangle therefrom.   The kitchen has stayed busy, as we practically took out stock in the Mssrs. Dannon and Co., as well as every fruit, granola, and peanut-butter enterprise going.

What a nice visit!  We’ve gone to Sweetpea’s piano recital (shortest on living record--chorus only, varying in pace from minuet to gavotte in a mere sixteen bars, and another tiny piece, just learned that morning, in which she managed to find and put on Ganner's hat between bow and resumption of playing, finishing triumphantly with the brim way down over her eyes---the Musketeer flourish at the end was well worth the half-hour drive in the cold).  We went to Steak and Shake for dinner, and all over the place to see Christmas lights displays.

But the quiet times when we’ve just sat and talked will be an always-memory for me.   A nice game of Go Fish can be as enlightening and rewarding as any College, Conference or Symposium, and for getting to know what your Grandchildren are interested in---can hardly be beat.  Those long stretches between visits leave a whole world of experiences and growing that we’ve lived second-hand, and so this up-close few days have been a wonderful gift.

They’re all upstairs, gathering up their luggage, toys, books, stuffed animals, fresh laundry and load of Christmas goodies, and I’d told them I’d show my blog friends their yesterday’s handiwork.  If Santa missed our house completely this year, if there were not a single ribbon-swirled box in the house---I’ve HAD my Present.

  2. Such a lovely visit that will no doubt be remembered by all for many years to come. Your grand children are fortunate to have such an engaging granny and one willing to make gingerbread house creations that Hansel and Gretel would be happy to eat.

  3. Well, you sound like the best Grandma in the land. Mine are coming the week after Christmas and I'm already getting nervous. They are going to tear the house down.

  5. My dear Rachel,

Hello. I'm sorry for not written to you before. It sounds absolutely enchanting to hear that you are spending a quality time with your grandchildren. I am absolutely delighted to hear that your newly decorated kitchen (I adore the colour!!) is proving to be very much in demand, no doubt, especially this time of the year...cooking and decorating!

I am so grateful to you that amidst all the entertaining and looking after your family, you took time to write to me and leave me a lovely comment, as always.

Virginia Woolf wrote in "To The Lighthouse": “Friendships, even the best of them, are frail things. One drifts apart.”

On the contrary, in our case, I hope that our friendship, no matter how far away distance from each other, will continue to flourish in many years to come.

I would like to thank you so much for being a loyal reader in my blog and for all your delightful and generous comments as always. I hope you and your family would have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy all the beautiful things that this festive season has to offer. Above all, I want to thank you for being YOU. You always brighten up my day.

Happy Christmas to you dear Rachel,

    ASD

  7. My Dear Rachel,
An extended visit at your home would be any grandchild's idea of what Christmas time is at it's best. I'm sure those hands of Go-Fish, making of snowflakes to hang from a pink Daisy chain are memories they'll cherish all their lives.

  10. Hello dear Rachel, It is way past bedtime but I must visit you first. Thank you for the sweet comment on my post today. The ornaments are so precious to me. The sugar plums are my absolute favorite and i also love plums in a dish to eat. Your memory made me smile. With six children to feed we definitely can agree our dish was never overfilled. Smile.

I adore your post and story about your grands visiting. You are so right...our grands are the best gift of all. I am so happy that you had all the fun of entertaining your darling grands. Plus the fact that the move will bring them so much closer so much more often Oh joy!!!

Wishing you a blessed Christmas from my heart to yours.
    Much love,
    Jeanne
